As the press, young stars had been trained to put their best face forward whenever I was around. But what about the perspective of the teen stars whose names — and lives — we were actually using? I interviewed hundreds of young stars periodically as they worked on new projects. I'm not sure if young stars should be allowed to be interviewed at allI've now watched "Quiet on Set" several times. Had the questions I'd been asking hurt anyone in ways I was unaware of?

But with Russian forces still inside the country and millions of Ukrainians displaced from their homes, fighting on the frontlines, or living overseas, there is no election in sight. Although Sunday is the day the constitution says Ukraine should be voting, it also does not allow it during wartime. He would have voted for Zelensky five years ago if he had had the chance and would vote for him now. Last August, President Zelensky was asked for his position in an interview on Ukrainian television and sounded sympathetic to holding a poll. As the United States Congress continues to dither over new military aid, elections in Ukraine became folded into the debate by some Republicans.

CNN —Saul Leiter had a thing for umbrellas. They pepper his mid-century photographs of New York, popping up over years of work: pink umbrellas, red umbrellas, yellow umbrellas. In “Saul Leiter: An Unfinished Word,” a joyous new retrospective on view at MK Gallery in Milton Keynes, England, these umbrellas sing out from the walls. Seoul, South Korea CNN —South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol is months out from a crucial election seen as a barometer of his mid-term popularity, but surveys show he has a big problem – the latest scandal surrounding his wife. “But with the Dior bag, there is this powerful visual evidence.”South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and his wife, Kim Keon Hee, attend an Independence Movement Day event in Seoul on March 1, 2023. The channel also provided Choi with the wristwatch and the Dior bag, according to the pastor. By appearing to not reject the bag, Kim gave ammunition to critics who have long accused her of using her position for personal gain. In a Gallup Korea survey last month, 56% of respondents said Kim should apologize for allegedly receiving the Dior bag.

In the US, romance scams resulting from catfishing have among the highest reported financial losses of internet crimes as a whole. A 2019 study found that young LGBTQ+ men in rural America experiencing catfishing on dating apps felt angry and fearful. She also emphasized the need to recognize today’s loneliness epidemic, which “leads people to perhaps be more susceptible to catfishing scams,” she said. Catfishing is not explicitly a crime, but the actions that often accompany catfishing, such as extortion for money, gifts or sexual images are crimes in many places. IDF lookouts warned their commanders about activity along the Gaza border, according to reports. Some of the activity the lookouts witnessed included unusual training protocols and more people lingering near the fence, per the outlet. Previous reports stated commanders told their lookouts Hamas were "just a bunch of punks" who wouldn't "do anything" when they reported what they had seen. "A day before everything happened, I saw people with maps," one lookout told N12, per J Post. Other lookouts reported seeing the same drills over and over: shooting, laying on the ground, then throwing grenades.

The window of the British interior designer Tamsin Saunders’s childhood bedroom looked out onto the South Downs, the rolling hills that culminate abruptly in steep chalk cliffs along England’s southeast coast. The landscape’s rugged beauty instilled in her an affinity for the patterns and textures of the natural world. She spent her early years in the nearby forests, collecting fossils and gathering fragments of wood to decorate with paint. Now, at 52, Saunders is just as devoted to such foraged treasures. Home & Found, the studio she established in 2013, specializes in sensitively renovating houses — often those of artists and makers — by building on what she discovers there.

Priscilla is also 14, a fact the film doesn’t shy away from. That aesthetic choice smartly steers “Priscilla” away from Luhrmann’s movie (which was much more interested in Elvis the performer) and further grounds the film in Priscilla’s perspective. The movie may also lack big musical scenes because Presley’s estate was unwilling to support the film or authorize the use of his songbook. Luhrmann’s hagiography was estate-approved and portrayed the singer as the innocent pawn of his craven manager, Col. Tom Parker. “Priscilla” shows how manipulative Elvis himself could be.

Singapore's prime minister Lee Hsien Loong vowed Wednesday to uphold "zero tolerance" toward any wrongdoing by government officials. His comments came after a wave of political scandals rocked the Southeast Asian nation in recent weeks, tarnishing the pristine image that underpins its standing as a global financial center. "The founding generation built up Singapore and entrusted it to our generation in good shape," Lee said in a parliamentary address Wednesday. Lee said actions taken after these scandals showed two aspects of how his PAP government works. "One, when there is a suspicion or allegation of wrongdoing in the discharge of official duties, especially possible corruption, there is zero tolerance," he said in the first parliamentary session after these events,.

A camera is seen outside the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) headquarters in London, Britain, March 13, 2023. Britain's BBC suspended a male member of staff on Sunday following an allegation that one of its star presenters paid a teenager thousands of pounds to pose for sexually explicit photos, beginning when the teen was 17 years old. The statement said, "It is important that these matters are handled fairly and with care," without giving details on the claims. The mother told the newspaper that the teenager had used the cash to fund a crack cocaine habit. "(Davie) has assured me the BBC are investigating swiftly and sensitively," she said on Twitter.

London CNN —When The National Portrait Gallery opened its doors to the public in London on Thursday, it was the first time in three years it has done so. The National Portrait Gallery was officially opened by Catherine, Princess of Wales, seen standing in front of Joshua Reynolds’ Portrait of Mai (Omai). Why would the National Portrait Gallery commit to taking this work they wouldn’t see until it’s finished, 90% of which is created by non-artists? What did she do?” Haworth told the National Portrait Gallery about the figure. Some art critics have been scathing of the gallery’s rework, with Jonathan Jones at the Guardian dubbing it “the same old cocktail party.” His review begins: “The National Portrait Gallery has been closed for three years.

In San Francisco, a Week of Destination Opera

Frank’s partnership with Cruz, the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, has been fruitful in the concert hall, but this is their first opera. Their subject is extremely familiar — the love of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera — but the treatment is less biographical and more mythic. But here, instead of the hero traveling to the underworld to retrieve a lost love, the protagonist journeys to the land of the living. In both cases, though, a creative spirit is required to cross borders, and there are dire consequences for any missteps. And rather than tell a life story — which in opera tends to result in episodic, undramatic works — Cruz hews to classical unities, with a focused plot that unfolds on the Mexican Day of the Dead.

Parents need not fear adolescent weight gain
  + stars: | 2023-05-08 | by ( Michelle Icard | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +11 min
Yet it sends adults into a tailspin of fear around weight, health and self-esteem. Yet weight gain remains a sensitive, sometimes scary subject for parents who fear too much weight gain, too quickly. “About 25 percent of growth in height occurs during this time so as youth grow taller, they’re also going to gain weight. Parents need to work on their own weight bias, but they also need to protect their children from providers who don’t know how to communicate with their patients about weight. “We all have a lot of work to do when it comes to conversations about weight,” Hutchison said.

[1/2] A view shows the aftermath after Turkish warplanes carried out air strikes, in Derik countryside, Syria November 21, 2022. REUTERS/Orhan QeremanAMMAN, Nov 24 (Reuters) - Turkish drones are targeting key oil installations run by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in northeast Syria, three local sources said, in air strikes which drew strong condemnation from the United States overnight. Turkey's warplanes began conducting air strikes on Syrian Kurdish YPG militia bases in northern Syria at the weekend, prompting retaliatory strikes along the Syrian border. The Pentagon said the Turkish air strikes threatened the safety of U.S. military personnel and that the escalating situation jeopardized years of progress against Islamic State militants in the area. The United States has roughly 900 soldiers in Syria, mainly working with the SDF in the northeast.
Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers about “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”CNN —“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” deftly completes the difficult task of continuing the franchise without its star, Chadwick Boseman, sensitively acknowledging his death by killing off the character of King T’Challa. Writing around his absence isn’t the first time that a fantasy story has been changed to accommodate a tragic loss. The death of Carrie Fisher (right) created "an impossible question" for the producers of "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker." To be fair, “Wakanda Forever” does as well and probably better than should have been expected under such trying circumstances. The question might well be impossible, but the answer is right there, and rooted in screen history.
‘Call Jane’ Review: Feminists Underground
  + stars: | 2022-10-28 | by ( Kyle Smith | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +1 min
The pointed abortion drama “Call Jane” seems unlikely to change any minds when it comes to an always-contentious issue, but this late-’60s period piece successfully channels some of the righteous rage that fueled second-wave feminism, which engineered one triumph after another and completely reconfigured women’s role in American society within a few years. As the film opens, patriarchy rules and is little questioned by such unassuming figures as Joy, a naive, timid Chicago housewife sensitively played by Elizabeth Banks . In an early scene, Joy is puzzled by a 1968 street protest indicating growing political anger that seems alien to her quiet and well-ordered life. Her husband, a litigator named Will ( Chris Messina ), relies heavily on her input when writing briefs, suggesting that she could be a better lawyer than he if they lived in a society that recognized women’s talents. Neither spouse considers that possibility; women are simply second-class citizens.
The problem with ‘Black trauma porn’“Black trauma porn” – much like “disaster porn” or “poverty porn” – generally refers to graphic depictions of violence against Black people that are intended to elicit strong emotional responses. The implication is that these images can be needlessly traumatizing to Black viewers for whom violence is an inescapable fact of life. “There’s a difference between telling a story of Black trauma and telling a story that is ‘Black trauma porn.’”How Till avoids the trap of ‘trauma porn’What, then, is the line between a story of Black trauma and “Black trauma porn?”For Young, the distinguishing factor is context. Put bluntly, is that depiction of Black trauma intended to appeal to the sympathies of White people? It’s notable that many of the recent projects deemed to be “Black trauma porn” have been the work of Black creatives – an obvious reminder that Black people are not a monolith.
Lourd, 61, isn't a household name, but he wields a stunning amount of influence in Hollywood. Lourd's Hollywood clients aren't just A-listers, they're A+-listers: Brad Pitt. An old-fashioned talent agent who loves discussing old movies and doesn't mind pointing out the flaws in his own clients' work, Lourd has become arguably the most powerful person in Hollywood. "He's one of the most powerful people in the history of Hollywood," said Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos. But Lourd's clients are such bankable stars that it's equally important for Hollywood executives to be friendly with him as it is beneficial for Lourd and CAA.
